AboutThe Artist
I am an outsider artist living and working in the Scottish Highlands. My practice spans pastels, ceramics, wood carving, painting, land art and installations. I began a career in law before getting funding for a PhD in Mental Disability Law and Politics looking at political participation for people detained under the Mental Health Act and since then has worked in academic research on a variety of health, law, technology and disability rights related topics and themes.

Dr Benjamin Clubbs Coldron LLB, PhD
I use my artistic practice to document, analyse and understand concepts and experiences as well as to tell stories about these that have some resonance or meaning to the community at large. The messages behind the narratives and relationships my art works develop are psychologically complex and often contradictory. Although I use traditional techniques I also try also to develop my own experimental methods and practices.
Exhibitions
Ben did his first exhibition in the Focus Gallery in Nottingham featuring a three series of works in pastel, wood, and paint which concentrated on ‘Spaces of possibility’. Respectively the works explored building and construction sites, personal reflection and transformation, and public moments of personal, social and political change. He attends a variety of craft fairs and workshops throughout the year. He has also done two collaborative exhibitions in Aberdeen at the Anatomy Rooms and Robert Gorden University on the themes of Conceive, Collaborate, Connect exploring the transition to magic of conception, the challenges and wonders of gestation, and the social transition to parenthood.
A fourth exhibition held at Yellow Arches in Sheffield was developed a contribution to the Charity Gambling With Lives which aims to lobby for reform of gambling laws and on mental health. This was important following the suicide of his friend who fell victim to this terrible industry.
More to come.
