Pastels
The SublimeLandscape

‘little doorways into secret worlds’
My approach to landscape is rooted in searching for the 'hidden poetry' within familiar forms: the moment where a drip on a twig, a lichen encrusted stone, snow, or light begin to trancend simple representation and take on a more psychological or atmospheric presence.
Through layered pastel surfaces and shifts in texture, familiar elements of the landscape are transformed into something more unstable, intimate, and resonant.
Central to the work is an interest in transformation: the way landscapes hold memory, vulnerability, and traces of human presence while remaining indifferent to them. The softness and instability of pastel allows the image to hover between formation and disappearance.
